Religious liberty remains a bridge too far in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan Extends Unjust Detention for Two More Months

On July 4, 2015, the Sabail District Court extended for another two months the pretrial detention of two of Jehovah’s Witnesses. This postpones the release of Irina Zakharchenko and Valida Jabrayilova until September 17, 2015. Investigators claim that this detention is necessary while they prepare the case for trial.
The Ministry of National Security (MNS) unjustly jailed the women on February 17, 2015, for sharing a Bible message with their neighbors. Meanwhile, the MNS continues to interrogate individual Witnesses regarding this case, some repeatedly.
